Why Ugbowo Needs a Nearby DHL Point
Ugbowo is one of the busiest residential and academic corridors in Benin City. The University of Benin sits at its heart, surrounded by student hostels, family homes, small businesses and a steady flow of people who need to send documents and parcels — sometimes urgently.
That mix produces a very specific set of courier needs. UNIBEN students and staff send transcripts and admission packages abroad. Families send clothing and food to relatives overseas. Small businesses around Ugbowo Market and Ugbowo Lagos Road send samples and trade goods to buyers. And because Ugbowo is on the north-western side of the city, an unnecessary trip across town can cost an hour or more.
Knowing exactly where your nearest DHL point is — and what to bring — turns a stressful errand into a short, predictable trip. This guide is written specifically for that.
Your Nearest DHL Office
For nearly all of Ugbowo, our Egor main head office is the closest and best-equipped service point. It handles international parcels, documents, domestic courier and pickup bookings, and its staff process customs paperwork daily.

Packing Before You Travel
Packing properly at home means your counter visit is quick and your shipment is safe. Whether you are in UNIBEN, Ekosodin or Ugbowo Market, these rules apply.
- Use a new, double-walled box for anything heavy or valuable.
- Size the box to the contents — oversized boxes increase volumetric weight and cost.
- Wrap each item individually with bubble wrap, foam or paper.
- Fill every gap so nothing shifts during transit.
- Seal all six faces with strong packing tape, including the bottom.
- Waterproof the contents — place items in a poly bag inside the box.
- Put sender and receiver details inside the box as well as outside.
- Remove old labels and barcodes.
- Mark fragile items clearly on at least two sides.
Documents
- Use a flat DHL envelope for paper documents.
- Ask for a rigid envelope if your document must stay uncreased.
- Never fold certificates or transcripts.
How Much It Costs
Pricing depends on several factors. Understanding them helps you avoid paying more than necessary.
- Destination — different countries fall into different pricing zones.
- Chargeable weight — the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight.
- Volumetric weight — length × width × height ÷ the DHL divisor.
- Service level — express costs more than economy.
- Fuel and surcharges — applied at the time of shipping.
- Insurance — optional, based on declared value.
- Pickup fee — a small charge if we collect from your Ugbowo address.
Reducing your cost
- Use a smaller box — volumetric weight punishes empty space.
- Send documents as documents — a flat envelope is much cheaper than a box.
- Combine multiple items into one shipment where possible.
- Choose economy if the deadline allows.
- Ship before 12:00 PM so your parcel moves the same working day.
How Long It Takes
These are working-day estimates and exclude weekends, public holidays and time spent in customs.
| Destination | Express | Economy | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 2 – 4 business days | 5 – 8 business days | Customs clearance can add time |
| Europe | 2 – 5 business days | 5 – 9 business days | Varies by country |
| United States | 3 – 6 business days | 6 – 10 business days | Destination city affects timing |
| Canada | 3 – 6 business days | 6 – 10 business days | Documentation must be complete |
| Middle East | 2 – 5 business days | 5 – 8 business days | Strict documentation requirements |
| Asia & China | 3 – 7 business days | 7 – 12 business days | Commercial shipments need extra paperwork |
| Africa | 2 – 6 business days | 5 – 10 business days | Varies widely by country |
| Australia & New Zealand | 4 – 8 business days | 8 – 14 business days | Strict biosecurity rules on some goods |
| Lagos / Abuja (domestic) | Next business day | 1 – 2 business days | Selected services only |
| Other Nigerian cities | 1 – 2 business days | 2 – 3 business days | Depends on destination |
| Within Benin City (same-day) | Same day (before 2 PM) | — | Metropolis only |
Peak periods — festive seasons, major sale events and periods of heavy global volume — can add one to three days. If your shipment is time-critical, tell us the deadline and we will advise on the fastest realistic option.

UNIBEN Students and Staff
The University of Benin produces one of the highest volumes of international documents in Edo State. Every application season, students and staff send transcripts, certificates, admission packages and research documents to universities and organisations abroad.
What UNIBEN senders should know
- Use a flat DHL envelope for paper documents — it is much cheaper than a box and clears customs faster.
- Do not fold certificates. Ask for a rigid envelope if your document must stay uncreased.
- Send to a full physical address. Universities abroad do not accept PO Boxes for courier deliveries.
- Include the department and building name if you are sending to a university — it speeds up internal delivery.
- Apply early. Application deadlines are strict, and customs at the destination can add time even when transit is fast.
- Keep your tracking number safe — many universities ask for it to confirm receipt.
Common Mistakes
These are the errors we see most often on packages from the Ugbowo axis. Avoiding them makes your shipment faster, safer and often cheaper.
- Vague commodity descriptions. "Goods" and "gift" cause customs holds. Be specific.
- Under-declaring value. This risks seizure, fines and voided insurance.
- Incomplete receiver address. Missing apartment, area or postal code delays delivery.
- No receiver phone number. Without it, delivery attempts fail and returns are expensive.
- Missing commercial invoice. Required for most international parcels, not just commercial ones.
- Shipping to a PO Box. Not accepted internationally.
- Ignoring destination restrictions. The item may be legal here and banned there.
- Oversized packaging. Increases volumetric weight and cost.
- Not checking who pays duties. Refused deliveries happen when the receiver did not expect a customs bill.
- Losing the tracking number. Tracing becomes much harder without it.
- Arriving after 6:00 PM. Packages dropped later move the next working day.
