Drop-off or Pickup — Which Is Right?
Before you decide which office to visit, it is worth asking a more basic question: do you actually need to drop off at all? For many people in Benin City, a pickup is faster and easier than driving to a counter.
Choose drop-off if…
- You are already passing one of our offices on your way somewhere.
- You prefer to see the counter process happen and get your receipt immediately.
- Your shipment needs a quick confirmation of price or documentation before you commit.
- You want to buy DHL packaging at the same time as shipping.
- You are close to Egor, AU Motor Park or Benin Agbor Road.
Choose pickup if…
- You are busy and cannot leave the house or office.
- You have multiple shipments to send in one go.
- You live far from any of our three offices.
- You are a trader, professional or student with limited time.
- You want a rider to bring a receipt and tracking number to you.

What a Drop-off Looks Like
If it is your first time at the counter, here is exactly what happens when you drop off a package. The whole process is usually 5–10 minutes for a straightforward shipment.
- Walk in and greet the counter staff No appointment needed. If there is a short queue, wait your turn and have your ID ready.
- Tell them what you are shipping State whether it is a document or a parcel, the destination, and roughly what is inside.
- Present your ID A National ID card, driver's licence, voter's card or international passport is accepted.
- Give the receiver's details Full name, physical address, phone number and email. For international destinations, include postal code and country.
- Complete the waybill Sender details, receiver details, contents, quantity, declared value, service type and your signature. Staff will guide you line by line.
- Your item is weighed and priced Actual weight and volumetric weight are checked. You pay on whichever is higher.
- Pay at the counter Cash, bank transfer and card payments are accepted.
- Collect your receipt and tracking number Confirm the tracking number is legible and the destination is correct before leaving.
What to Bring
Coming prepared is the single biggest thing that speeds up a drop-off. Bring these items with you.
- A valid means of identification — National ID card, driver's licence, voter's card or international passport.
- The receiver's full name, physical address and phone number.
- A postal or ZIP code for international destinations.
- An honest description of the contents.
- The declared value of what you are shipping.
- A commercial invoice or packing list for commercial goods or international parcels.
- Customs documentation where required by the destination country.
- Your packed item — boxed or in a DHL envelope, sealed and ready to go.
Best Times to Drop Off
Traffic and counter queues both peak at predictable times in Benin City. Drop-offs are fastest and most relaxed at these hours.

Drop-off Checklist Before You Travel
Run through this quick checklist before you leave home or office. It takes two minutes and saves trips back.
- ✅ Item is packed and sealed. Box taped, envelope closed, nothing loose inside.
- ✅ Old labels and barcodes are removed. Nothing on the box that scanners can misread.
- ✅ Receiver's full address is written down. Including postcode for international.
- ✅ Receiver's phone number is written down. Not lost in a chat thread.
- ✅ Your ID is with you. National ID, driver's licence, voter's card or passport.
- ✅ Contents description is clear. Not "goods" — specific items.
- ✅ Declared value is decided. Honest, realistic figure.
- ✅ Commercial invoice is ready if shipping commercial goods.
- ✅ You know which office you are going to. Egor, AU Motor Park or Benin Agbor Road.
- ✅ You have checked the time. Before 12:00 PM for same-day movement.
How to Make Your Drop-off Faster
These are the habits our fastest customers use. None of them requires extra effort — they just move you through the counter quicker.
- Message us on WhatsApp before you travel Send the item type, destination and service you want to 08130947747. We will confirm the price, the documents you need and the right office. You arrive already knowing what to expect.
- Have your ID and receiver's details in hand Not in your pocket, not in a bag — ready to hand over at the counter.
- Write the receiver's details down in advance Full name, complete address, phone number, postcode, country. Written, not remembered.
- Bring the commercial invoice already written If it applies, having the invoice ready saves 5–10 minutes at the counter.
- Use DHL envelopes for documents A flat envelope moves faster at the counter and through the network than a box.
- Arrive before 12:00 PM if same-day matters After 12:00 PM, your shipment moves the next working day regardless of how fast the counter is.
- Avoid Saturday afternoons Saturday mornings are fine. Saturday afternoons can be the busiest walk-in window of the week.
- Call ahead if you have multiple shipments Multiple waybills are faster at Egor than at the branches, and calling ahead means the counter is prepared.
Drop-off for Different Shipment Types
The counter process is similar for everything, but some shipment types benefit from specific preparation before you arrive.
Documents
- Use a flat DHL envelope where possible.
- Do not fold certificates or legal documents unnecessarily.
- Bring the receiver's full address including postal code.
- If the institution requires a sealed envelope, seal it inside the DHL envelope and tell staff.
For a full guide, read Where Can I Send Documents to the UK.
Parcels
- Bring the parcel fully packed and sealed.

- Mark fragile items clearly on at least two sides.
- Have the commercial invoice ready if shipping internationally.
Commercial and business shipments
- Bring an itemised commercial invoice.

- Bring the total volume and weight figures if the shipment is large.
- Freight is handled at Egor — bring samples there.
E-commerce orders
- Multiple orders can be processed in one visit.
- Each parcel gets its own waybill and tracking number.
- Best dropped off at Egor, where fulfilment accounts are managed.
Parking and Access at Each Office
Parking differs at each location. Here is what to expect so you can plan your approach.
| Office | Parking | Access Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Egor 5 Textile Mill Road |
On-street parking on Textile Mill Road | Approach from Egor town; park on the side of the road. If arriving with a large load, call ahead on 08130947747. |
| AU Motor Park 244 Benin Auchi Road |
Open space inside the motor park | Drive into AU Motor Park. The service point is inside the park area; ask any park official for "DHL". |
| 258 Benin Agbor Road | On-street parking on Benin Agbor Road | Look for Number 258. Park nearby and walk in with your shipment. |
If you are arriving with a large or heavy shipment, call the office first so the staff can prepare space or advise you on the easiest approach.
Common Drop-off Mistakes
These are the errors we see most often at the counter. Avoiding them makes your drop-off faster and safer.
- Arriving without the receiver's phone number. Without it, delivery attempts fail — especially internationally.
- Writing a vague description. "Goods" and "gift" cause customs holds. Be specific.
- Under-declaring value. This risks seizure, fines and voided insurance.
- Packing loosely. A poorly packed box can crush in transit, especially on Benin City's roads.
- Leaving old shipping labels on the box. Old barcodes confuse scanners.
- Forgetting your ID. The counter cannot process a shipment without it.
- Arriving after 6:00 PM. Drop-offs after closing move the next working day.
- Bringing freight to a branch office. Freight samples and freight enquiries are handled at Egor.
- Losing the receipt. Without the tracking number, follow-up becomes much harder.
- Using an unverified "DHL point". Always use one of our three offices or request pickup directly.
- Bringing an unpacked item. You can buy packaging at the counter, but arriving unpacked takes extra time.
- Assuming all counters have the same stock. Egor carries the widest range of DHL packaging.
